Check your immersion heater

We don't want a repeat of the tragic death in Somerset of a child, when boiling water heated by an immersion heater in a hot water tank caused an overflow tank in the roof space above to burst.

Most of SPH properties have gas fired heating and do not have immersion heaters. The problem only affects houses and possibly top floor flats, however if you use an immersion heater, you need to check the following:

You should switch the immersion heater off and call SPH if... at any time:

• hot water is coming out of the cold water tap or running into the WC cistern (not just for a few seconds, which can happen where cold pipes and hot pipes run alongside each other), or
• if the hot water tank makes loud bubbling and gurgling noises when switched on.
